| oct 29 2006 | | White Homies | What I don’t understand is why white kids have taken to pretending they are black. I am talking about wearing their pants like Bob the builder, layers of triple ex tee shirts, chains, bling etc. If I was a black person I would be horrified at these pasty white folk trying to imitate my language, clothing, method of speech, etc. let those honkeys go find their own culture. While I acknowledge Eminem as the finest example of a white man singing Rap, he is only the latest in a tradition of Black music being taken over by white male artists. It started with white male musicians who took up singing the blues when that was in vogue, from Elvis, The Stones, John Mayall the list is endless. In the fifties and sixties it was “rock and roll” and “rhythm and blues.” This didn’t inspire a whole generation of white kids to walk around with dark suits, Ray Ban Wayfarer sunglasses, pork pie hats etc. Well except for Dan Aykroyd and James Belusie.
Enjoy the music by all means. Music brings people and cultures together. Just don’t be so lacking in originality that you want to pretend you are from South Los Angeles. You typically don’t see Norwegians embracing the Pakistani culture, or Indonesians trying to dress and sound like Jews, or South American taking up the Glaswegian habit.
While we are on the subject you never see black Goths. This group seems to be exclusively a bunch a really pale middle-class white kids looking sad. What’s with that?
