Canadian currency.
The British have their Pound Sterling, the Germans before the Euro had their Mark and the Americans have their Dollar; the almighty Dollar, the reserve currency for the whole planet. Impressive sounding names for the great currencies of the world. Names that, whether true or not, convey a sense of stability, security and reliability.

We Canadians, on the other hand, have our Loonie. Sounds a lot like something from a Disney cartoon, or special coinage that would be used particularly during the period of the full moon, and leaves little of dignity for a country that now has the largest land mass of any country in the world. To compound this image and showing little sense of imagination, the two dollar coin is called the Toonie. Rumour has it that the Canadian mint is trying to perfect a five dollar coin, to be issue in cedar that will be called the Woodie.

When you examine our coinage you straight away come across a whole petting zoo of animals, the loon, polar bear, moose. The Americans stick to one image, the eagle, a majestic lord of the skies without equal.

With Nightlight Harper, or Stevie, as Dubya calls him, trotting around after his idol and mentor, I can’t see any change, to our coinage, that would reflect our aspirations of being a world power that sends our troops to foreign lands to suppress the local population. Maybe, our next coin will have a puppy dog on it, or will the Brits beat us to that?
