| jul 06 2006 | | Democracy doesn’t work. | Winston Churchill described democracy as a poor form of government. He went on to say it was better than all the rest. Since then the comparison with it being better than other forms of government has remained constant however, the quality of democracies has fallen considerably.
Those with the most failed democracies are the ones currently trying to export their ideology to other sovereign nations by force. As in communist China the people have no real voice in the political process. Voting fodder is required to give the system a veneer of respectability. Government of the people by the people has a hollow ring to it. Government of the people by the ruling elite and corporatism is the reality faced by the populations of most western nations. Industries get grants, subsidies and inflated contracts, the people pay taxes.
Whether it’s the American model where wars are started with no mandate from the elected body or the populace and hurricane relief is provided only so corporations can cash in on the hand-outs, or China where the people are disregarded for the interests of party officials and industrialists who bribe them. There is no difference between East and West. Recent disclosures of the Deputy Prime Minister of Britain dealings with big business illustrate how the system is there to facilitate the lobbying of government by business and vested interests. Not for the general public who have little access or understanding of the system.

As things generally become ‘more so’, no matter what the subject is, the prospects going forward aren’t good. Whether it’s health care, pensions, clean drinking water, employment or a myriad other public concerns, your government won’t necessarily have your interests in mind as they frame legislation. However, when it comes to I.D. cards, camera surveillance, camps for those judged to be a threat to the system, access to health care or potable water, etc. the needs of other special interest group will be more important.
He that pays the piper calls the tune has never been truer.
