Iran
The commander of US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, Admiral William Fallon, is to retire from his post early. He cited the "embarrassing situation and public perception of differences between my views and administration policy" as the reason for retiring. Source BBC.

Now that the guy who unequivocally stated that 'the United States would not attack Iran on his watch' has stepped down (pushed?) Are we closer to an assault?

Now might be a good time to review history to see if we can learn from previous mistakes. It was America that acquiesced to pressure from the oil companies and snuffed out the fledgling democracy in Iran. What a wasted opportunity. Where might Middle East politics be today, had not America interfered like some dodgy uncle in yet another country? They then install a puppet dictator (sound familiar – Iraq, Afghanistan) who commenced a brutal regime of cracking down on civil liberties, murder squads, corruption, all the usual time tested methods that the CIA have used around the world for years. Eventually they ran out on their stooge and an even more repressive regime took over. It is almost as though if you create a regime of torture, corruption, thuggishness, intolerance and allow it to operate for a couple of generations, so its values can be instilled at all levels of the populous, you can hardly be surprised when what follows is not a gentle, benign, tolerant, peaceful society. Duh.

So as America is determined to stomp around the world meddling at the request of industry in any country it can intimidate, should we expect the worst? Is there any chance of the American people waking up and once more being the generous, productive, innovative people who contribute to the world and stop acting like the bully in the playground? I wish it could be true.
